5 Tips to Keeping Your New Year Goals

This year, why don’t you resolve to stick to your resolutions and see them through.

1.  Be Realistic

The surest way to fall short of your goal is if you make it unattainable. For example, resolving to quit sugar completely or going for a run every day is setting yourself up to fail. Instead, strive for a more achievable goal such as going sugar-free 3 days a week or doing 4 exercise sessions per week.

2. Outline Your Plan

Decide how you will overcome the temptation to sleep through your morning workout or have that sugary snack. This could include booking in the night before for a 6am pilates class so that you’re held accountable if you don’t show up,  or sticking a note on the fridge reminding yourself that you don’t really need that extra snack.

3. Talk About It

Tell your friends and family about your goals to improve your health and wellbeing so they can be there to support you. Even better, find a friend with similar new year goals who can be your accountability buddy and help motivate you.

4. Track Your Progress Along The Way

By breaking your large goals into smaller, bite sized chunks, you get to track your progress and celebrate little victories along the way. For example, if your goal is to build strength, break it into little milstones so that you aim to hold a plank for 30 seconds by February, 1 minute by March.

5. Stick To It

Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient. You’ll be rewarded if you do!
