How To Protect Your Immunity This Winter

Now that the temperatures are steadily dipping its important to consider your immune health. Your innate immunity can be compromised by many things. Long hours at work, not enough sleep, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, drinking too much coffee/stimulants, not getting enough exercise and poor spinal health just to name a few. Even over-exercising can lead to immunosuppression!

Before you reach for supplements and minerals to fill the gap, make the effort to eat well, get proper rest, get adjusted regularly and begin some healthy movement. If you implement these strategies and want to turbocharge your immune system, or can’t seem to stick to all of the above you could consider these natural supplements:

  1. Astragalus: is a herb that can stimulate and boost your immune strength. It can also reduce flu-like symptoms, however, Astragalus works better if you take it as a preventative – before you get a cold rather then during.

  2. Vitamin C: supports a healthy immune system by supporting immune cellular processes, including increasing the function of our immune cell types to munch up viruses. Vitamin C is another great preventative this winter season to protect your immunity.

  3. Zinc: is a mineral which can lessen the effect and duration of a cold or flu if taken when the symptoms start. Zinc is also an important mineral in wound healing!

  4. Magnesium: is an all round mineral that helps to keep your body running optimally because it is involved in so many of your body’s cellular processes. It can help you recover from a cold and flu by helping you sleep, regulating your temperature and relaxing your muscles. It has been called the “anti-stress” mineral and that’s why I personally maintain my magnesium levels all year round!

  5. Echinacea: is a plant that has a similar action to Astragalus. It boosts your immunity by increasing the amount of white blood cells in your system which fights off infections. The results of studies testing echinacea are mixed, partly due to the differing strengths of echinacea used in each study, but it does appear that it can potentially halve your chances of contracting a cold!

  6. Lemon, clove and honey tea: this is my go to when I feel like I’m coming down with a sniffle or if I’m confined to my bed. The lemon is anti-microbial to kill of germs, cloves are anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and honey soothes a sore, dry throat.

Just a clinical observation here – I do notice my patients who are under regular chiropractic care seem to get sick less often.

  • Her ear is now sitting over shoulder so the muscles in upper neck are stronger. Her neck has moved backwards which puts less stress through the upper back and shoulders.
  • Her upper back muscles are now active and stronger which is why it appears straighter. The core muscles are now able to be activated which is why the curve in her low back has reduced. Stronger core = less low back pain!
